my jump off for this mural project (463 Third St, Niagara Falls, NY) is a quote by Albert Einstein "Logic will get you from A to B. Imagination will take you everywhere." I decided on a scene where a boy is traveling and his imagination stops him in his tracks. After landing on my concept, I hand drew elements, then scanned them in to the computer and started playing around in photoshop. You can scroll to the right to see parts of this process. I've included elements that give a nod to the history of Niagara Falls. Including the Le Griffon, the first full sized sailing ship on the upper Great Lakes of North America, leading the way to modern commercial shipping in that part of the world in the 17th century. It's maiden voyage started at Niagara River, traveling to Lake Michigan.
October 24th 1901: Annie Taylor was the first person to conquer the falls in a barrel. After climbing inside her airtight wooden barrel, the air pressure was compressed to 30 p.s.i. with a bicycle pump.
1848: a boy and his kite helped to bridge two countries. 16 year old Homan Walsh entered a kite flying contest, of who could fly it from the American side of the Niagara River to the Canadian side. Local iron workers used this method to tie the kite string to pull rope across, tying off the rope to pull a cable across, which led to the first suspension bridge across the Niagara Gorge.
Bossy Sims was a daredevil cow of the mid 1800s. She would frequently wade out into the dangerous waters above the American Falls often within 100 feet of the crest.
