Niagara University President to Read Children’s Story to Literacy Program Participants
NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. (July 26, 2016) – This Wednesday, July 27, the Rev. James J. Maher, C.M., will read a children’s story to the Niagara Falls City School District students participating in Niagara University’s Primary Enhancement Program.
NU’s president will read You’re Here for a Reason by Nancy Tillman to pre-K-2 students from Harry F. Abate, Hyde Park and Niagara Street elementary schools.
The Primary Enhancement Program is a collaborative effort between NU’s College of Education and the Niagara Falls City School District. The two-week summer program, now in its eighth year, enlists graduate students from the College of Education to work with campers daily from 9 a.m. to noon to enhance literacy skills. Participants also take weekly “field trips” to places such as the on-campus Post Office, Leary Theatre and Castellani Art Museum.
The camp is under the direction of Drs. Kathleen McGrath and Mary Ellen Bardsley, faculty members in NU’s College of Education.

Niagara University
Founded by the Vincentian community in 1856, Niagara University is a comprehensive institution, blending the best of a liberal arts and professional education, grounded in our values-based Catholic tradition. Its colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, and Hospitality and Tourism Management offer programs at the baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral level.
As the first Vincentian university established in the United States, Niagara prepares students for personal and professional success while emphasizing service to the community in honor of St. Vincent de Paul. Niagara’s institutional commitment to service learning has led to its inclusion on the President’s Honor Roll for Community Service every year since its inception in 2006, and its recognition with the Carnegie Foundation’s Classification for Community Engagement.
