Local Businesswomen to Discuss STEM Careers with Young Women at Niagara University
NIAGARA UNIVERSITY, N.Y. (XXXXX, 2016) – On Aug. 2, five local businesswomen and a chemistry professor will discuss careers in science, technology, engineering and math with girls in grades 6-9 who are participating in a summer STEM camp at Niagara University.
The 32 camp participants will hear from Jessica Chapman, director of maintenance services at Calspan; Sonya Pegler, manufacturing manager for Saint-Gobain; Dr. Robyn Goacher, assistant professor of chemistry at Niagara University; Denise Cassidy and Jennifer Ventress, retail director and district manager for Verizon Wireless, respectively; and Lisa Montesano, lead environmental engineer for National Grid, which sponsors the university’s trio of STEM camps.
Niagara University’s College of Education, for several years, has sought to provide access to quality STEM education for children – especially girls and low-income youths, who studies show enter the STEM fields at the lowest rates.
This year, NU has offered STEM camps for children ages 5-7, children in grades 3-8, and a Young Women’s Camp for girls in grades 6-9.
The camps focus on energy and advanced manufacturing, both in content and in college and career readiness activities. An emphasis in the Young Women’s Camp is also placed on personal development, etiquette and leadership.
All activities are aligned to the New York State Learning, Common Core, College and Career Readiness Standards, and Next Generation Science standards.

Niagara University
Founded by the Vincentian community in 1856, Niagara University is a comprehensive institution, blending the best of a liberal arts and professional education, grounded in our values-based Catholic tradition. Its colleges of Arts and Sciences, Business Administration, Education, and Hospitality and Tourism Management offer programs at the baccalaureate, master’s and doctoral level.
As the first Vincentian university established in the United States, Niagara prepares students for personal and professional success while emphasizing service to the community in honor of St. Vincent de Paul. Niagara’s institutional commitment to service learning has led to its inclusion on the President’s Honor Roll for Community Service every year since its inception in 2006, and its recognition with the Carnegie Foundation’s Classification for Community Engagement.
