ADVISORY: Students To Debut Artwork Installation To Mark America Recycles Day
Mosaic Created from Recycled Material to Hang in City Hall
Niagara Falls, N.Y. - Students from three Niagara Falls elementary schools will join Mayor Paul A. Dyster and city officials on Tuesday, November 15 at 4 p.m. in City Hall to unveil a unique art installation as they mark America Recycles Day. The unveiling comes as officials work to make future generations more aware of the current detrimental disposable aspect of our culture and promote the potential reuse of items typically sent to landfills. This year, the America Recycles Day event will be used to discuss upcycling and the creative reuse of materials.
Mayor Paul Dyster said, “It is inspiring to see the creative visions of some of our city’s youngest residents come to life in such an artistic and environmentally friendly way. I am confident that our future is in good hands as the City of Niagara Falls and the nation seeks to promote cleaner, greener communities; and I am proud to display and encourage residents to view this imaginative work right here in City Hall.”
“This was a great collaboration between the Niagara Falls S.W.E.E.T Program and the Niagara Falls City School District,” said Niagara Falls City School District STEM Coordinator Ronni McGrath. “Students in several schools were able to join together in an exploration of environmental science and the arts to find a creative use for items that might normally be discarded as trash. Each child was able to put his/her own personal ideas to work on this upcycled project. The enthusiasm and hard work put forth by the students in this project was inspiring to see.”
John Caso, Director of Public Works said, “This was a collaborative effort between the Niagara Falls S.W.E.E.T. Program and the talented students in the Niagara Falls City School District. The Department of Public Works and S.W.E.E.T team look forward to continuing to educate our local students and the public on the importance of recycling in our community are excited to be able to share in this one-of-a-kind installation.”
Throughout the week of November 7, city representatives attended classes at Abate, Hyde Park and Maple Avenue Elementary Schools. During the class period, students discussed recycling, the City ordinance on refuse and recycling and the vast possibilities of upcycling.
“My goal is to teach the students that their recycling cart is FULL of possibilities,” said Brook D’Angelo, S.W.E.E.T. Program Coordinator. “I am proud of the work they have done and the lessons this unique display will help to teach all who view it.”
Throughout the discussion, students painted plastic discs that were recovered from a local manufacturing facility once used to cap-off rolls of wire. They will be hung in a mosaic style to be displayed at City Hall until November 23. The public is invited to attend. Light snacks will be provided by Modern Corporation.
